Anthony N. Akosa, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Officer, is a board-certified family practice physician that has been practicing medicine for over 16 years and also has extensive health plan experience. He oversees corporate medical policy, population health management and practice transformation for HealthEC®. Dr. Akosa completed his Family Practice Residency at the Indiana University Medical Center 1995 and has remained on the faculty since then. He also earned his MBA in finance from the Indiana University Kelley Graduate School of Business in 2002. Dr. Akosa is leading efforts at HealthEC® to implement cutting edge technology and effective processes for Population Health Management and Practice Transformation to help provider organizations transition from fee-for-service to value-based reimbursement models and achieve the triple aim – better health, better care and lower cost. He is still a practicing physician in addition to his executive duties at HealthEC, keeping him in touch with the patient experience in health care.

Dr. Akosa has extensive pioneer and MSSP ACO experience since the inception of the ACO model of care from the planning stages in 2011 to actually building up one of the few Pioneer ACOs that realized cost savings in its first year, along with managing many MSSP and Commercial ACOs. Dr. Akosa assists with the development of provider and patient engagement strategies to improve outcomes e.g. leading provider meetings, , developing incentive programs for providers and suggesting patient engagement tools, strategies and incentives. With his experience in developing and implementing effective Population Health Management (PHM) programs for all lines of business at a health plan for 10 years, Dr. Akosa works with ACOs to help them hire and train their care coordinators or provider office clinical staff in PHM strategies. Dr. Akosa currently leads the HealthEC efforts to lead the Care-Coordination teams at the Barnabas Health and JFK ACO’s.
